The Art of the Personal Essay: Sticking the Ending with Julia Nusbaum

Write an Ending that Sticks

How do you write an ending that sticks with your reader for days to come? One they will think about while brushing their teeth, doing the dishes, driving to work. Ending are—notoriously—one of the hardest parts of the essay and often they get neglected. Pushed aside in favor of trying to nail a gripping opening. But there is nothing an editor hates more than reading a compelling essay only to have it end anticlimactically. Or, worse, have no ending at all.

In this 90 minute workshop we’ll take your current work in progress (finished or not, it doesn’t matter. Come with what you have!) and explore how to create a well rounded ending that summarizes your essay without rehashing every detail. Then we will look at examples of some great essay endings and discuss what elements they used and how you can apply them to your work.

At the end of the 90 minutes you will walk away with all the tools you need to stick your ending.
