The Power of the Extended Metaphor
Sometimes, even when we want to write about something, we find we can’t or we can only write about one thing—and we don’t want to. Creating extended metaphors strategically can be highly effective, especially if approaching a difficult topic or issue we don’t want to name. The right metaphor offers a detour, an alternate path around the language. We’ll talk about a few prose and poetry examples then put our knowledge to practice. You will leave with a few beginnings and prompts to take home.
